Sixmilebridge is a historical village that was once a booming industrial town. At one stage i even had boats from Amsterdam arrive up the O'Garney River to the corn mills. Its industrial decline came when a bridge was built in Rossmanager by another family in 1784. Up until the time the bridge in Bunratty was built in 1804, Sixmilebridge was on the main road to the West. Sixmilebridge has unrealised potential. It is architecturally attractive with is three
squares, a green and its focal point of the stone bridge over the river. It is from this bridge that Sixmilebridge gets it name from. From that bridge over the mountain or as they say "as the crow flies" to Thomondgate in Limerick city is 6 Irish miles: the Irish mile being 2,240 yards in length. Many people visit the area thinking that the bridge is actually 6 miles long.
